When I was about 14 years old, someone standing on the street in Queens handed me a PETA pamphlet. My best friend at the time looked it over and – horrified by the graphic images – insisted that we become vegetarian together.
A week later, we were cooking pasta and realized we only had a jar of meat sauce on hand. And that was the end of that.
I didn’t think about the subject again until I was 21 and had gained some significant weight. The scale had just hit 199, and I was desperately watching every health documentary I could find on Netflix to avoid tipping over the 200 mark. By accident, I ended up watching a documentary called Vegucated. While no other diet had resonated with me, this lifestyle I was learning about appealed to the animal lover in me. When I gave all of my non-vegan food away to my friends, I was doing it for ethical reasons. The 50 lbs of weight I lost as a result of going vegan was an added bonus.
6 months later, I met a girl. A very, very non-vegan girl. We fell in love. We ate a lot. I gained back every pound I had lost plus 30 extra over the course of the next 4 years.
In that time, I convinced her to eat a plant-based diet with me more than once. Unfortunately, the binge-eating problem I’d developed made it easy for me to throw ethics aside and fall “off the wagon” for months at a time.
One of my biggest goals for the new year was to fix my relationship with food and to regain my health. Once I remembered how much I loved whole plant foods, it was only a matter of time before I cut out the meat and dairy once again. This time for good.
I’m happier, living more in line with my own values, losing weight in a way that feels sustainable and easy, and actually having fun in the kitchen again.
I don’t want to be the pushy vegan and none of you will ever find judgement here. Everyone has their own choices to make, and I just wanted to share mine with you.
I’ll be documenting a lot of my weight loss updates and meals on Instagram and YouTube, so come on over if you’re into that sort of thing. If you’re reading this the morning I post it, watch for a new What I Eat In A Day video on my channel to see what I’m eating these days to lose weight. If you’re reading it later, the video will already be linked below!
Side-note: I’ll be replacing any of the beauty products I use with cruelty-free options as I use up what I already have. Any suggestions for skincare products will be greatly appreciated!
