4 Years Later

In the very beginning of 2014, I met a girl. I told her I loved her two weeks later and she asked me to be hers on February 16th. Last week, we celebrated both Valentine’s Day and our 4th anniversary together.

The very first Valentine’s Day we spent together, before she had even asked me to be her girlfriend, was humble and sweet. She picked me up from work, we exchanged cards and chocolates, and we ate Chinese takeout on the couch while watching movies. We recreate this night every year.

We spent the next day walking around and shopping in Woodstock and New Paltz, two of our favorite day-trip destinations. On our actual anniversary on Friday, we made homemade vodka sauce (another annual tradition), grabbed a bottle of tequila, and played Call of Duty all night long. This may not be your typical idea of romance, but we loved it.

No four-year-long relationship comes easy, especially when you’re growing through your early 20’s and trying to figure out who you are, what you want, and where you’re going. Still, I can honestly say that I don’t think a day has gone by in four years when we didn’t find ourselves laughing together. That is why being with her has always been worth it. We have laughed through tears, broke down laughing in the middle of fights, and laughed at how purely ridiculous life and trauma can be. And – with her – nothingĀ everĀ feels hopeless.

I could write about Megan forever, but it would be lost on the people who don’t know this magical human and what it really means to be loved by her.

Thanks for everything, Meg.

I love you.
